The American Dreams

I’m not a great follower of American politics because am an Indian and my interest was piqued because of the notorious American caucuses in which candidates of the same party hurl dirt against each other interesting as it seems though because soon after the nomination is done the candidates who’ve been lambasting each other suddenly turn into sugary pals eulogising the nominated candidate as if none existed like him. That seems funny at least to me, not to mention my friends who chide when this topic comes up on to anyone of us.

As for the present, if the present were the last week it was Obama all over. Wow, he’s the man for America. A black making it to the peak of the American Politics guess that’s one of the best things ever to happen in the 21st century though the man who’s responsible for this turn around and every thing that the colored -people in America owe to is not here to see his Dream come true. Well, yeah one might say Obama’s literal son of Martin Luther King Jr. and quite co-incidentally though he delivered his speech at the Democrat Convention  on the same day when the the legend Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his most famous speech “I have a Dream”. Though each were different in the sets of tomes they set. But one thing is clear America for the first time is accepting a change with open hands and which might go to the wire in November. This was one week back.

Enter John McCain, the 71 year old, a luddite compared to Obama, as TR has put it(McCain has a lot of catching to do on Obama on the tech front) the guy who is supported by George W. Bush the man when pops up on the NDTV puppet show is the most loved guy for the hillarity and the ludicrity he generates on stage. Republicans surely are short of stars there is no one who could really get the crowds swooning for them. But not until McCain throws a gamble and he chooses a less known Sarah Palin who looks more like a librarian than a VP nominate, the incumbent governor of some state called Alaska and former mayor of some tiny town called Wasilla (Its real far from mainland). And guess what in the matter of four days she’s become a kind of instituition. No one knows or rather cares if Joe Biden ever talked about the issues but everyone is worried about her new born son who needs special care owing to his Down’s Syndrome. This might well, bring at least a bit of poignancy into the McCain’s campaign. And the funds they are just pouring in and soon evryone have literally forgot about the Huricane Gustav or the Iraq war. And if the Republican Convention is anything to go by, then McCain is surely on the best path and is secretly lauding himself for his choice.

Well, for me a citizen outsider, these things really trickle me. I don’t care who comes into the office but what I care is the thing that both the presidential nomins are really working it up and though not convincingly the McCain camp at least for few days will be having the sting owing to the “S” factor added by Sarah Palin. For Obama, he’s come to the nomins stage so he’s not an ordinary guy and sure he’s expected to break up sometime soon.

Google’s Chrome: The Web Browser

So, here it is at last the the search giant has at last come up with its own web browser which would allow a lot of its apps and poducts embedded into it thus increasing the UI. The chrome based on the comic version pioneered by Steve McCloud has a google look appended to it. The browser comes equipped with a fast java script engine developed by the V8 team from Denmark, so thats interesting. From the screenshots the tabs are above the address bar which is christened the omnibox which uses the search suggestions thing from the Google Search engine. And also the users might expect a brery of apps that might be easily accessed like the Youtube, Gmail and et al using the Chrome.

As for me I expect an improvement over the browser experience while opening or closing the tabs which is pretty nasty in the Mozilla browser though one might largely guess by its appearence that its been largely inspired from the mozilla firefoz browser. And also the add-ons part might look good not to mention the various extensions. So, on a whole I think the bar for browser experience ‘d be raised a few notches up and with micro soft’s hostile bid to acquire Yahoo hitting a rock thus evaporating its plans to monopolise the search engine market this move from Google will surely be ringing alarms as for the Search engines dominance along with its launch of the browser might at least to some extent divert the users of IE to chrome for who knows reasons more than one.

The brand Google might well be used to popularise this new product but its ratings might also depend on the Android launch as the mobiles might well come loaded with this new browser. So, Keep stalking these things, Something’s surely gonna strike the hot iron.

3-D G1

One of the Android fans designed this beautifully compiled piece of 3-d enhanced G1. This looks amazing and gorgeous….I like the white version though am not sure what are the versions HTC ‘d be releasing.

Bowlers AHOY!

Very few handful of people might ‘ve thought that our team ‘d do so well against the Lankans in their own back yard and that too on the ground where they hold an ominous record of over 66%. Ask me and I’d say someone might wake me up from slumber any time. Well really I don’t think even the skipper and the coach thought this was coming. The verve and precision with which Zaheer hit the deck and produced bounce and nailing Sangakkara eventually was simply great. If anyone must be credited with this series victory then it is the bowlers and only bowlers for everyone contributed including the likes of Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma bowled with purpose in the fourth ODI.

The thing that the bowlers got right was they were trying to pick up wickets and with the likes of Jayasuriya and Sangakkarra I think that was the option left as these are the kind of batsmen who get away all by themselves.

The second thing being the way our batsmen played against Mendis. I think that was applaudable coz not many have played him in the test series and with only two or three matches the did well to attack him and play him well without building pressure.

Over all I must admit it was a team effort with evryone rallying around Dhoni who really has the instincts in him.

UBIQUITY: Ubiquituosly different

Its been a week I guess since I’ve come to know about this thing called ubiquity from the stable of Mozilla labs and it is a good app to start off. So after I was thinking Command line is a passe Mozillaites are reviving good interest in this uber can I say pretty old a technology. Its kinda mash up and hence pretty aptly called the Web 2.0 Command line.

The interface as given is very simple. What you’ve to do is simply type what you need to do and it does it for you. Now, that’s really cool as if you want to send an email just type it into the interface and it opens the window for you and if you want to embed a vid or a pic just type in and its done for you. This though is pretty in its nascent stages. The idea is really cool and just on the watch to use it.

The G1

As the days are nearing the Android Guys are coming up with more and more Info regarding the latest on the G1 phone which is thanks to them we are updated on the word go and the latest is the design of the G1 from HTC. Wow! Its really Cool and the design is really sleek. Forget the specs with Google behind it we’d be getting more than we had anticipated on our mobile that’s for sure….the design just blows you out from where you are!

I guess the guys at MountainView are one of the most smartest guys in the software industry and this article on the Android site sure does snatch the ground from underneath. According to them this thing is called the EXCLUSIVITY and that’s really fantabulous. I just liked the very idea of reserving a few brilliant apps just for yourself instead of distributing to every second guy you run into. The apps like StreetView is just really cool though I must say they are ineffable.

Not only this but there are much cooler apps exclusively for the Android phones and guess with each closing day we get to hear more of these cooler apps. Me though have a real slower connection so can’t really have a sneak peek into them. Would be happy if got an ‘op to tweak with them.

I think the processor is real fast and the apps like Sprints NFL live is good to hear as chances are they might come up for something of that sort even for cricket. I hope this happens for the Indian edition of the Android phone. I hope there is one.

I liked the xHTML part though that would call for an increase in many more areas like security and et al.

The trackball rocks.

The advantage of having Google at the end of the developer side is we get to see many of its own apps like You Tube and the Calendar into the mobile.

What I rue about though is the negative on the flash part as that ‘d ‘ve been nice though I ‘m sure they are going to give us something special.

The Street view just the looks of it elucidates everything and it is just ineffably cool.

As it is apparent now the difference betwixt the iPhone and Android is something of the magnitudes of Unix and Windows.

As for the games gotta watch out on that front. Really love to see the umpteen of the supporting file types As i’ve real problem with few of them on my mobile.

WiTricity

After MIT’s Marin Soljacic demonstrated that a bulb can be lit with its power source a few feet away Intel are trying to tread his foot steps and are trying to gain new ground on this pretty nascent a technology. The guys at MIT have named this new technology WiTricity, a combination of the words “wireless” and “Electricity”.

Intel on thursday lit a 60-watt bulb using a power source some 3 feet away with an efficiency of 75% which is suffcient to power the laptop according to  Intel’s Justin Rattner.

Very large electric coils were used that resonate at same frequency using which electricity can be transported wirelessly.

With the technology still in its nascent stages there are many challenges that are to be addressed.

gPhone v iPhone

So, here in India the iPhone was atlast unveiled yesterday and that is at mid night. And all the lucky ones got their hands onto it. Everyone there was really excited with beaming faces and all. I don’t see anything great about the so called iPhone even if its a 3G what’s the big deal about that. It is deficient in many features when you compare with a nominal mobile phone in India and guess when it is compared with the upcoming gPhone that is the HTC Dream that comes loaded with the brand Googles Android OS. Andy Rubin showed a glimpse of how the looks might be to the BBC back in Feb and I thought the thing looks really great. The thing that strikes about Android is that the way Google has carried its launch. The ADC has given every developer a chance to prove themselves and by making this a kind of a contest Google has made it more exciting. And each of the Android developer has brought a fresh idea with him which is fantastic. And even few guys who missed out the bus one of them being the Geomata team whose idea of finding places with blip which is quite innnovative and exciting also might get a chance the second time.

Andy Rubin's Demoed gPhone

gPhone

Many versions of the names though are doing their rounds as few of the insiders were heard talking about the codes like “G1″ and the “kila”. HTC though is bringing up its Dream which would be equipped with Android.

However, the latest specs are said to be these as put up by the Androidguys:

UMTS/HSDPA 3.6Mbps
Qualcomm MSM7201A 528MHz processor
Synaptics capacitive touchscreen
GPS w/built-in compass
128MB RAM / 256MB Flash

I hope to develop an app myself for Android. Hope that’ll be soon.

Here are the latest specs as put up by the Android Guys:

  • 528Mhz Qualcomm 7201 processor

AIR vs PRISM

As its raining incessantly out here so are the apps in the software market. One can guess their proliferation just on the exponential realms and each one of them offers exciting loads of surprises. As the world waits for the release of one of the most talked about mobile operating systems, The Android which one could get his hands onto in the September I guess, on the HTC mobiles and on the other hand the other giants like IBM investing in the new paradigm of cloud computing there are these two nerds trying to get people zero in on their own desktops.

Adobe and Mozilla have come up with their own  independent versions of software that could improve your internet XP quite literally by downloading the web pages on to your desktop. Though are a few catches in each of these.

Comparing each other I think Prism is the easiest to use. All you have to do is download the add-on of prism from the mozilla web site and start converting your favourite web sites into applications that appear as shortcuts on your desktop on a fly. This is very easy to use but the thing is that when you open the website it seems to run as if it is running on a normal Mozilla browser minus the bars where in the Prism tends to lose its sheen. But its really fantastic to have everything on your desktop and Mozilla guys ‘ve done a fantastic job by integrating it to the browser it self. And where the Prism loses score there the AIR tends to score.

Though one has to download a much bigger sized app and also one has to download  different types of apps for each thing independently. Each one is an air file so you’ve to download it and install it each one seperately. But the stuff is the worth the wait as you’ll be treated to some breathtaking apps of which one of my favs is the Parleys Pandora which is a sort of a gateway for the real desktop learning XP. It looks awesome and has an apple type of styled look. The thing is that you have to download each of the app seperately and then install ‘em. There are many air files presently and they are on the raise itching to give the user an ultimate desktop experience.

The main difference between the two is that the prism opts you to open your website in a different or your web app for that matter which loosely speaking becomes bookmarking though it is something better than that. On the contrary the AIR provides you with much better options like personalizing your desktop using the different web apps which are hell bent on making your Internet experience richer.

I’m sure the guys at Mozilla are working hard to improve their new kid. I opine they can work a bit more on the look and feel of the apps so that it looks different after the conversion. As for adobe I’m on the look out for more myriad apps to come up on their website.

THE L33TS

It was the scorching afternoon of April 9th and as I dash myself across the door of  our Computer Lab I find my friend soaked up in sweat in a computer Lab trying to find the missing lynchpin off a servlet. And as I arrive he gives that big grin and assures me that we ‘d be submitting our project by 6′O clock the evening. I nod my head with even much bigger grin helplessly though as the only thing I did the whole of my final Sem was to blatantly and quite blemishly guess stare at the black and white screen and as my friend did the whole lot of things which I mean is hard-coding,executing and yes implementing it.

Well, to say it all it started on Jan 18th I guess and each one of us had our own speculations of at least forming a team and as each one of us were relatively still strangers we were just trying to dwell it all on our own. We were quite wryly thinking about ourselves launching from somewhere into the blues. To get things straight guess there were some forces which were quite surely trying to get us off the iron but I was helll bent over forming some group and kicking off the scheme of things. Guess there was only one trait that ‘d get us into the groove and that was of being stubborn. We somehow formed a team not strong though as three of us were from different backgrounds but with a common goal.

Things were really hard though initially as I had to learn all the concepts and not being from the Comp. Sci. I had to really iron my brain out in getting in sync with all those concepts. And also there was “Can u guys pull it off” kind of queries from friends and ….. that really kept us alive.

We had to travel a lot and though luckily ours wasn’t a very complicated project so that covered up for the rest of the things. To top it all as the luck ‘d savour us we got out SRS only before 13 days of the D-day. And with only 7 days for the final submission we came to know that all the work we’ve been doing all these days was of no use as they had someother thing to get us through. And with all the odds up and with all the hullaballoo the rest is history.

We somehow submitted our project and yes though we’d proved everyone wrong who were of the opinion we’d ‘nt pull it off but proved one of my friends right by pulling it off. So, guess there was something called the Spirit of Wipro that made us gell with each other so puissantly or ……

There is no end for few things and hope this is just a itch of an experience for the things to come……

Limping Around!

It’s been long since I’ve last posted one and a lot of things have changed from then. The unleashing of the IPL and the whole range of Stock market bumps and booms and hell out of things including the wordpress. But yeah my life has’nt changed even by a whip and after I’m done with my exams its the same old routine. My life ain’t changed much and even with the new entertainment called the cricketainment things are the same as the IPL has lost its sheen at least to a meager extent with the exit of the Chargers and the Indians to most exciting teams with legends in their ranks. Once I found my home team out of hope I started batting for Mumbai Indians as it was pretty natural as for the guy who was leading the team. But, then my heart broke after their seires of losses after raising hopes that they’d probably be the first ones to win the IPL.

THE BLAH-BLAH CHANNEL

In the recent years the Indian television industry has seen a proliferation of news channels and with that came the competition to establish each one of them as the cremedelacreme news channel. Naturally every channel can’t become the best but, yes few really stand out by the way of their presentation and the quality of the news they provide and also the sort of unrevealing things they reveal out. Channels like NDTV are the trailblazers in their respective fields with the quality of journalism and the amount of verity in their news. Their ability to track down the most pernicious of the cases and thus providing their viewers with nothing but the truth is something that has been in their ouevre since their inception. Follow that up with a littany of awards which makes it the best channel. In the recent years umpteen number of channels came up the likes of CNN-IBN which have really proved to be the flagbearer of creative journalism and somewhat radicalised the whole art of news presentation and not to forget its editor-in-chief Rajdeep Sardesai whose been undoubtedly the hit man the sort of hue and jive he produces is just amazing and back that up with a Padma Shri added recently to his cap this channel is just something for everyone. Programmes like CJ and Axe the Tax et al are really the best programmes and needless to say the most coveted too. There are also these business news channels like CNBC TV-18 and NDTV Profit which give their viewers a first rated material on stock markets and everything from the business world though there are many programmes on each of these channels which I personally opine to be the best. And then comes the other types of channels like Headlines Today and Aajtak to name a few which are absolutely rubbish if not trying to be euphemistic. They always are found tracking the rubbish news when all the other channels are racking something very useful. The upside of this being  that  these channels have explicit coverage of cricket whenever there is an Indian win or something happens like Sehwag’s or Sachin’s ton or a Dravid’s special. Except for this these channels are mere blah-blahs and yes much bigger than that. The lopsided nature of these type of channels are that they are just trying to satiate only a narrow part of the audience and guess at least no one whom I know has ever rated these type of channels any more better and adding to their ill-forgotten things are the ways they resort to while presenting the news which is no where near at least the average level.  My friends and me like to have polemic sessions on these issues whenever we find ourselves idling and this is the only point that we tend to agree that these HTs and the et al things are might say blasphemous to the journalism industry. At the end of the day what matters is the EQ!
